About Me

Nancy McMahon is the CEO and owner of Exploration Associates, Ltd. a DBE firm and has 45 years of experience. She is a professional archaeologist, cultural resource manager, land management planner, title researcher and genealogist.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Anthropology Specialization Archaeology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI, and a Master of Arts Degree in Pacific Island Studies and Anthropology, Specialization Archaeology, from the Field School, Anahulu and Maunalua at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI. She also holds a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instructions from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI, and a Certificate and Master of Science in Geographic Information Sciences – GIS and Masters of Science – GIS from the University of Southern California.

Ms. McMahon was appointed by the Governor of the State of Hawaii as the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer, State Archaeologist, Deputy Administrator, Archaeology, and Historic Preservation Manager for the State Historic Preservation Division.

Her professional career in archaeology started at the Bishop Museum where she was the Principal Investigator for several contract archaeology projects. She served as the Quality Control Archaeologist for the Explosive Ordinance Remediation on Kahoolawe both for the model and the actual project. She has served as an Archaeologist for the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers working in Hawaii, Samoa, Micronesia, Korea, Okinawa and Japan, and for the Bureau of Land Management in Colorado. She has been an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at Brigham Young University’s Hawai’i Campus in the Division of Behavior and Social Sciences teaching Anthropology, American Studies, Polynesian Studies, and Pacific and Hawaii Archaeology courses. She has worked as the Coastal Zone Management Planner for the County of Kaua`i.

Her archaeological experience began at age nine, and includes field schools with Denver University (Colorow Cave) and the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Kualoa, Kahana Valley, Moanalua, and Anahulu), fieldwork throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Micronesia, Society Islands, an internship with the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., work at the Bishop Museum as a Restoration Technician and an Artifact Analyst on different projects, and participation in the Earthwatch Project mapping late Bronze Age volcanic deposits with ground penetrating radar in Thera, Greece while looking for the “Lost City of Atlantis”.

She was hired as the Historic Preservation Specialist – Archaeology, FEMA, July 2013, A 106 Compliance Specialist, Worked at Forrest City, Queens, New York in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, New York She is currently working as a Park Planner for the County of Kauai.
